As soon as young children are introduced to rules and start to learn to obey to those rules, it can be difficult for parents to remain sensitive when their children try to bend or break those rules. The short-term (preventive) VIPP-SD intervention aims at enhancing parental sensitivity in interaction with their children, as well as during times when children have to learn to get acquainted with rules and limits (sensitive discipline). The VIPP-SD program is carried out at the family’s home and consists of 7 visits (sessions) of approximately 2 hours each.

During the visits several video recordings are made of diverse caregiver-child interactions in everyday (play)situations. Thereafter the recordings of the previous visit viewed are discussed by the caregiver and intervener. While discussing the recordings, the caregiver and intervener work together on:

  1. Increasing the observational skills of caregivers.
  2. Increasing caregivers’ knowledge about the upbringing and development of young children.
  3. Increasing the capacity of caregivers to empathize with their children.
  4. Making the caregiving behavior more effective by using sensitive responsiveness and sensitive discipline.

In 2002, I started delivering VIPP-SD to families as part of a research trial at the Centre for Child and Family Studies at Leiden University in The Netherlands. After spending a few most valuable years there as an intern and student-assistent, I graduated in 2005 as a Developmental and Educational Psychologist.

In 2007, after the intervention was shown to be effective, I collaborated with Prof. Dr Femmie Juffer in developing the VIPP-SD Training Course at Leiden University. Since 2011, I have trained and supervised many others as an independent VIPP-SD Trainer, through a number of organisations, including The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust in London, UK. Over the years, I have also trained several new VIPP-SD Supervisors and Trainers and I have been involved in the implementation of the method within a variety of settings, groups and countries.

Even as an independent worker, I have always been working closely with the former VIPP Training and Research Centre at Leiden University. In January 2024, I co-founded VIPP-SD International, a foundation licensed by Leiden University to facilitate the continuation of the VIPP-SD Method and Training Materials.
